SOULTERA (2o23) is my directorial debut and introduction into the world of entertainment. Written in a time of burnout and bereavement after a loved one's passing, SOULTERA entered into existence as a claim to personal process, and, in its becoming, became a claim to community. I submitted the script on a whim to the country's largest student-run production company, Brown Motion Pictures, where it was one of five selected scripts from a total of 51 submitted short screenplays to move into production. I applied as a first-time director and led a crew of over twenty undergraduates from across fields of interest. Exploring hardships of assimilation and grief in the life of a second-generation Latina lawyer, SOULTERA was one of the hardest experiences of my life, where, at the age of 19, I faced and overcame the obstacles and complexities of what it means to be a creative leader.
On December 7, 2023, the film premiered to a room of over 650 strangers, colleagues, and friends. The experience evoked tears, exchanges of gratitude, and the knowing that we had created something rare, honest, and wholly its own.
